How SCORE works

SCORE examines organizational stewardship across six capacities and 36 sub-capacities, six within each capacity. You rate four focused statements inside every sub-capacity. SCORE reads those responses against nonprofit capacity research, capacity-building benchmarks, and observable health signals, which together inform four stages of stewardship: Survive, Stabilize, Build, and Steward.

SCORE is practice-informed, not scientifically validated. It should be interpreted alongside organizational documents, contextual information, and facilitated conversation, rather than read as a standalone score.

The Six Capacities

Every nonprofit carries a different mission, history, and set of challenges. Yet the work of stewarding a mission well tends to rest on the same six connected capacities. SCORE separates them so strength in one area stays visible as strength, and fragility in another stays visible as fragility, then examines how the six reinforce or constrain one another. Strengthening one often creates room for the others to grow.

Mission Clarity

A shared understanding of purpose, the people or community served, the change sought, and the priorities that deserve finite attention.

Governance

Accountable oversight, wise decision-making, sound stewardship, and a healthy partnership between the board or governing body and executive leadership.

Leadership

The capacity to develop, connect, and sustain the people whose influence carries the mission forward.

Culture

The lived pattern of trust, belonging, communication, learning, accountability, and relationship that shapes how people experience the organization and work together.

Execution

The discipline of turning priorities into ownership, action, measures, recurring review, and adaptation.

Resources

The financial, human, relational, operational, technological, physical, and informational assets brought into alignment with mission.

The assessment process

  1. 1

    Assess Your Organization

Rate specific statements about how your organization currently operates across SCORE’s six capacities: Mission Clarity, Governance, Leadership, Culture, Execution, and Resources.

Every question is a rating of how true a statement is of the organization today, from not at all true to completely true. Where it helps, you can add brief notes to provide context behind your answers. The assessment typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and can be completed in one sitting or saved and resumed.

  2. 2

    SCORE Analyzes Your Organization

SCORE groups your rated responses by sub-capacity and reads the resulting patterns against established nonprofit capacity research, capacity-building benchmarks, and observable organizational health signals.

The developmental stage summarizes that analysis. SCORE also checks for strengths, benchmark gaps, critical risks, cross-capacity constraints, and conflicting signals. “Not applicable or unsure” responses are set aside when scores are calculated.

  3. 3

    Receive Your Mission Stewardship Report

The Mission Stewardship Report organizes findings by capacity and developmental stage, then connects those findings to evidence and organizational health signals.

Here is how your report is broken down:

    • Capacity Stage Profile
    • Evidence & Confidence
    • Strengths to Protect
    • Constraints & Risks
    • Next-Stage Priorities
  4. 4

    Put Insight Into Action

SCORE turns those priorities into a 12-Month Stewardship Plan with clear owners, quarterly actions, and success measures.

The plan focuses leadership attention on the highest-leverage moves for the year, so the report becomes something the organization acts on.
